Owensboro native Marie Mann has dedicated over five decades to working with children. She has served in a multitude of capacities in many different places. Her journey to arrive at BES was a circuitous route, but ultimately led her to a school where she has become a mainstay of the highly successful preschool program.
Ms. Marie headed east to Lexington to attend the University of Kentucky after graduating from Daviess County High School. She was unsure of what she wanted to do for her career. “I had no idea at that point in time what I was going to do,” Ms. Marie said. “Then, in the latter part of the second semester of my freshman year, a lightbulb went off in my head that I wanted to be a teacher. I had a friend up there that was going into education and that aided me in thinking that I could do that too.”
Ms. Marie graduated from UK in 1969, earning a degree in elementary education with an endorsement to be able to instruct preschool aged children. Plainly ready to enter the classroom for her first job as an educator, she made the tough call to put her teaching aspirations to the side to follow her then husband wherever his military career took him. In fact, she has lived in five different states. “We moved frequently. I decided to become a stay-at-home mom and devote my time to be the best mother I could be,” Ms. Marie explained.
There wasn’t much staying at home, however. Ms. Marie was a longtime fixture at her children’s schools as they were growing up. “I really enjoyed volunteering. I would help out in any way I could,” Ms. Marie said. “I would tutor the students. I even directed plays.”
Following a seven-year stint as the director of preschool at a local church and a brief run as a substitute teacher, Ms. Marie accepted a job as an instructional assistant at East View Elementary School. Then, in 2017, she was hired to be a preschool instructional assistant at Burns Elementary School, a position she still holds today. Helping preschool students grow is very rewarding to Ms. Marie. “Watching kids smile when they catch onto something is really special,” Ms. Marie said. “We’re trying to lay the foundation for their attitudes toward learning.”
A caring, warm, grandmotherly presence, Ms. Marie is a tremendous asset to her preschool classroom. A BES staff member said, “Ms. Marie brings her own ideas and creativity to enhance student learning. We are truly fortunate to have her”
Ms. Marie has four adult children: Cari, Laura, Rachel, and Aaron. She enjoys gardening, creating flower arrangements, clogging, and biking.

Students in Elementary and Middle School who pack their lunch can now receive up to three free items to accompany their packed lunch.

The BES preschoolers worked together to build a tower with castle blocks. Preschool provides students with an endless amount of opportunities to build positive social skills and be creative in their play. In preschool play is work!
BES preschool students enjoy working together at the sand table. Outdoor play is an important part in a preschool child's development. While outdoors students can build gross motor skills, social skills, language skills, and imaginative play skills. All of these skills help improve a child's ability to complete academic tasks in the classroom.
