Mr. Lanham’s Career Options class at Burns Middle School has officially entered the business world with our very own “Career Ideas Tank”
Over the last few weeks, students created products for different career modules and pitched their ideas to our panel of wealthy “investors” (aka teachers and administrators with to invest imaginary money and very real questions and opinions for our students).
While some of the products could have been real. Some of the biggest deals included:
Mrs. Lanham, Mrs. Ebelhar, and Ms. Carolina teamed up to invest a combined $60,000 into a makeup mirror company that uses lasers to apply and remove makeup… while also somehow ending up with 51% ownership. We’re pretty sure the students learned an important lesson about reading contracts.
Mrs. Dunn shocked the room with a $40,000 investment into the “Power Guard X,” an electrical safety product designed to help prevent house fires.
And the biggest deal of the week goes to Mr. Patton. He was so impressed with the new hairspray product “Rockstar” that he bought the company out completely for $60,000. Rumor has it he’s already preparing his hair for the commercial shoot as he will now be the new face of the product.
Not all of the products were quite ready for mass production as they were still in the needed more “research and development” stage.
One group introduced a heated baby beanie powered by batteries that were located directly next to the baby’s head. The investors immediately decided to convince them to change the power source for fear that several parenting groups would probably have concerns. After agreeing to change the batteries and after a name change they did secure an investment.
Another team created a heavy-duty cleaning solution specifically designed for cleaning up crime scenes. While creative, we may have accidentally created a product that raised more questions than answers.
And perhaps the most delicious idea of all — edible dessert cups that you can eat after your ice cream or cake is gone. Finally… less dishes and more dessert.
I’m so proud of all the creativity, teamwork, confidence, and problem-solving that my students showed throughout this project. Whether the ideas were future million-dollar businesses or future lawsuits, the students gave it everything they had!
