Kathryn “Katy” Harrison has been named principal at Sorgho Elementary School. The announcement was made at 2:45 p.m., prior to a reception to welcome her to her new role. She will begin her new role on July 1.
Harrison began her educational career in 2002 in Owensboro Public Schools as an elementary classroom teacher at Owensboro 5-6 Center. She continued to serve Cravens Elementary and Newton Parrish as a classroom teacher until 2019. While in the classroom, she focused on creating innovative and engaging lesson plans for all content areas, while implementing self-paced learning and putting a focus on communicating with students, staff, and parents. After an extensive career in the classroom, Mrs. Harrison was named Instructional Coach at Estes Elementary. A role she served in for six years. While in this role, she focused on supporting student learning, providing professional development to staff, and assisting with scheduling and calendar management. Mrs. Harrison also focused on leading MTSS core teams and managing and analyzing student data, while developing family engagement opportunities.
Harrison is currently serving as the Assistant Principal at Estes Elementary, a position she has held for the last year. In this role, she has supervised the school’s teaching and learning. She has worked to maintain an effective learning climate in the school, including evaluating and supervising the instructional processes, as well as overseeing the implementation of school-wide curricula. Other responsibilities have included establishing guidelines for proper student conduct through the Positive Behavior Intervention System; planning, organizing, and implementing school activities; and implementing and supervising special education programs.
Harrison holds two Master’s Degrees, one from Western Kentucky University in Administration, graduating in 2023, and another from Indiana Wesleyan University for a Master's in Education in 2006. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 2002. In 2010, she earned her National Board Teacher certification with a focus in Literacy, with recertification in 2021. She is a graduate of Apollo High School.

With a shared commitment to excellence, I am dedicated to ensuring the success of every Wildcat, every day.”
Harrison said, “I am committed to listening, learning, and building strong relationships as we move forward together. My goal is not just to lead, but to support, collaborate, and ensure that every student, staff, and family feels valued and empowered while at Sorgho.”
