pol launch

Today, Daviess County Public Schools unveiled during the Opening Day ceremony the district’s Portrait of a Learner. This will serve as the guiding document for DCPS to inform curriculum development, classroom instruction, and community partnerships.

Through a diverse group of community stakeholder meetings in the spring, the DCPS Portrait of a Learner is made up of four competencies: Respectful, Resilient, Communicator, and Problem-Solver. Each of these competencies has four characteristics that summarize the competency.

“Our Portrait of a Learner is an agreed-upon set of aspirations for what we want for every student in an ever-changing world that is driven by technology, human interaction, and innovation,” said Superintendent, Charles Broughton. “The Portrait of a Learner gives school leaders and teachers the framework to design instruction in a way that promotes real-world competencies and job readiness.”

The DCPS Portrait of a Learner ties in with every staff member and their role in working Together for Kids. These competencies transcend from the bus ride to school, the classroom, the playground, and the sports field. All of our staff and students can learn to exude these competencies as they become better world citizens for the Daviess County community and beyond.

"DCPS is excited to launch our Portrait of a Learner," said Jana Beth Francis, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning.  "Our four competencies define broad goals for each student that are achievable through a variety of learning paths.  I'm excited to work with teachers throughout the year to bring life to the Portrait of a Learner."
