DCPS Takes a Leap Forward in Literacy Education with Kentucky Senate Bill 9: The Read to Succeed Act

Owensboro, KY - Daviess County Public Schools is excited to announce a groundbreaking initiative aimed at boosting literacy skills among our students. As we prepare to embark on this transformative journey, we are proud to align our efforts with the Kentucky Senate Bill 9: The Read to Succeed Act. We are committed to ensuring every child in our district has the opportunity to flourish as a proficient reader.

The Read to Succeed Act represents a landmark legislation that emphasizes the critical importance of literacy in a child's education. Director of Elementary Schools and MTSS Coordinator, Leslie Peveler stated, “DCPS values the individual child and this work allows us to become laser-focused in the classroom as well as partner with our families to meet children’s needs in reading. We value TEAMWORK in planning our interventions and COMMUNICATION with families to work towards the goal of reading proficiency by 3rd grade. As our families attend parent/teacher conferences this year we intend to implement a comprehensive approach to foster a love for reading and support our students in achieving literacy EXCELLENCE.”

**Individual Reading Improvement Plans (IRIP):**

One of the cornerstones of our program is the development and implementation of Individual Reading Improvement Plans (IRIPs) for each student. These personalized plans will be tailored to the specific needs and abilities of each child, ensuring that no one is left behind on their journey to becoming a proficient reader. Our dedicated team of educators will work closely with students and their families to create these plans, setting achievable goals and tracking progress along the way.

**Reading at Home Plan:**

We understand that reading extends beyond the classroom walls. To reinforce the importance of reading at home, we are launching a Reading at Home Plan. This plan encourages families to engage in daily reading activities with their children, whether it be through shared reading, discussions about books, or even visits to local libraries. By fostering a culture of reading at home, we aim to complement classroom instruction and promote a lifelong love for reading.

"We believe that every child has the potential to become a proficient reader," said Matt Robbins, Superintendent of Daviess County Public Schools. "Through the Read to Succeed Act and our commitment to individualized support, we are confident that we can unlock the full potential of each student, helping them not only succeed academically but also thrive as lifelong learners and achieve excellence in learning."

Daviess County Public Schools is thrilled to embark on this journey toward enhanced literacy education. We look forward to working closely with our dedicated teachers, students, and families to make the Read to Succeed Act a resounding success in our community.
