DCPS Attendance Zone Update

Background, Recommendations, Timeline

The DCPS Attendance Zone Committee has been working to develop recommendations for changes in our attendance zones to address statistically supported concerns that several of our schools are reaching enrollments that exceed ideal learning conditions, while others have space that must be efficiently utilized.

The Committee hosted three public “Listen and Learn” sessions in October 2014 and collected additional feedback from 438 respondents through an on-line survey. Thank you to all who took the time to attend these meetings or respond to the survey; your responses were given careful consideration and many ideas collected were used in the development of the plans.

After weeks of meetings and thorough consideration and presentation to the DCPS Board of Education, the Committee is now ready to present final recommendations to the Daviess County Public Schools community.

Two additional meetings have been scheduled to specifically address revised recommendations involving Meadow Lands and West Louisville elementary schools and Burns Middle School:

6 p.m. Monday, March 23 - Meadow Lands Elementary School (for MLES)

6 p.m. Monday, March 30 - West Louisville Elementary School (for WLES and BMS)

FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS are posted on the pages linked below, which contain specific information for families that may be affected by these recommendations.

Before clicking on the links, please review the following information to help you understand more about the proposed recommendations:

  1. Rezoning changes are recommended to take place with the 2015-16 school year.
  2. Grandfathering options will be offered for students attending schools where changes are recommended.  Click HERE for a summary of DRAFT Grandfathering recommendations for students entering grades 4, 5, 7 or 8 at these schools in the 2015-16 school year.
  3. When you click the links below, you will see maps showing areas recommended for rezoning. These maps include a chart with the following information:
    1. Current enrollment at the affected school (not including preschool); and projected enrollment at that school if the recommendation is given final approval.
    2. Current building capacity at the affected school; and projected enrollment capacity if the recommendation is given final approval. This figure is based on the number of students the building is designed to accommodate under Kentucky Department of Education guidelines.
    3. Current percentage of students at the affected school who are eligible to receive free/reduced price meals (F&R) based on household income; and the projected figure if the recommendation is adopted. This figure is used to help us maintain a socio-economic balance among our schools, as noted in our Guiding Principles. Click HERE to view those Guiding Principles.
  4. You will also see a list of streets and address ranges in the areas recommended for rezoning. IF YOUR STREET/ADDRESS IS NOT LISTED HERE, YOUR HOUSEHOLD IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS ATTENDANCE ZONE RECOMMENDATION.
  5. You will also see information about the Grandfathering option being offered for students who will enter grades 4, 5, 7 or 8 in 2015-16.
  6. Each page also includes the schedule (time, date, location) of a meeting designed to provide more information about recommendations proposed for your area. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and share your thoughts at this meeting.
  7. Feedback may also be sent to dcpszones@daviess.kyschools.us To assist us in responding to your concerns, please include your home address, grade level(s) and school(s) your children currently attend.
  8. Once all school-level feedback has been collected, the Attendance Zone Committee will review and consider all these ideas and suggestions before presenting a plan to the Daviess County Board of Education for adoption.

Proposed Transfer Policy:

1)  A student previously granted transfer living in areas not designated for attendance zone change may remain at the school to which their transfer was granted.

2)  A student living at an address designated for change who, through approved transfer, attends a school other than the school assigned to their home address, must reapply for transfer to the school they currently attend or to another school deemed “open” to transfers. However, students in this category entering grades 4-5 or 7-8, and their siblings, are eligible for grandfathering.

NOTE: Transfer requests will be accepted at the DCPS Central Office, 1622 Southeastern Parkway, beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, March 2. Requests will be stamped with time/date received and will be reviewed/approved in order received. Transfer request deadline is June 30.
