A Message from Virtual Academy director Chad Alward:

I would like to take this time to welcome you to the Daviess County Public Schools K-8 Virtual Academy.  I know that many of our students, parents, staff, and community members are feeling apprehensive about the start of the new school year.  I like many of you have some of the same feelings, but those feeling are outweighed by the excitement I feel about this unique opportunity.

We have an uncharted path before us this school year in the virtual world.  This is not NTI 2.0, rather we are setting the path for what online school will look like.  We have developed a structure that will give students, parents, and staff a predictable schedule while allowing for quality interactive classes.  We will be using a combination of traditional Reading and Math curriculum while using several project based lessons in Science and Social Studies.  Even though we will not have music, PE, and art in the Virtual Academy, we will promote local, regional, and online opportunities for you to experience the joy many of you gain from your elective subjects outside the school day.

As part of this unique and exciting adventure we need to ensure that your child has reliable internet at home as well as a computer that they may use during the school day.  Our school district has been able to provide computers for all of our 3rd - 8th graders in the Virtual Academy that requested a device when they originally choose the Virtual Academy.  The computers we have available at each school is only for those who requested a device be provided.  Please remember that we are not providing computers for our Kindergarten - 2nd grade students.  All students will be online from 8:30 - 3:00 each day with built in breaks throughout the day.  Because of this we will not be able to share computers between multiple students.  Please contact me if you do not have internet access at home or are not able to provide a computer for your Kindergarten - 2nd grader for the Virtual Academy.

Please visit our school website at http://dcps.org/va/ to find out information about your child’s daily schedule.  We are currently adding more information every day.  Two of the most important questions that I have heard from parents is where may I pick up my child’s computer (3-8) and how do we log in on the first day of school.  Below is the information regarding your 3rd-8th grader’s laptop pickup location and time based on their “home school” enrollment.  Students should begin to check their school email accounts on Monday for “invites” to their Google Classrooms to login by 8:30 on Wednesday, August 26th.

This opportunity is going to rely on communication and participation in every one of our classes.  Now that we have our email list put together for our Virtual Academy parents and students, you will begin to see a flow of communication from the school and teachers.  As Colin Powell once said, “If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters.”  Our habits will begin with being on line and having a positive attitude.  I can’t wait to see the “big things” each and everyone of you will achieve this year!
