Principal’s Journal

Great people, not great programs, make great schools!  This is kind of a theme from Todd Whitaker and many other authors who write about teaching and education.  I wanted to end the year with this statement because I believe we have great people working together to make Burns Middle School a great school.  We have been very lucky to have some very good programs at BMS, but what made the programs great or successful were the people developing or leading the program.  We have great teachers, great custodians, great secretaries, great counselors, great cafeteria ladies, great volunteers, great parents and we have great students (the best our parents/guardians have to send us)!

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for an excellent year!  We have had our struggles this year.  We have had our successes this year.  However, most importantly – we have learned and we have grown this year.  We will be a better school next year because of the lessons we have learned this year!

I also want to take this opportunity to wish our 8th graders, their parents and our staff that will be moving on next year the best of luck as they continue their education and careers at AHS or at another school!

Finally, I want to wish everyone a safe, exciting and fun SUMMER BREAK!

We will be out of school on May 26th for Memorial Day.

DCPS Board revises calendar

Additional make-up dates designated for 2014-15 instructional year

The Daviess County Public Schools Board of Education met on April 17, 2014, and approved a revised instructional calendar for the 2014-15 school year in order to meet legal requirements for designating make-up days equal in number to the largest number of days missed during the past five years. DCPS schools missed 14 days because of inclement weather during the 2013-14 school year.

The revised calendar adds four additional make-up days to next year’s instructional calendar. Families are reminded to avoid potential make-up days when scheduling vacations, appointments etc.

The revised calendar is posted on the district website at www.dcps.org and will be shared with parents and the community through district and school communications.
